Advanced Certificate in Science programme (Foundation Courses for Science & Engineering Degree)

Entry requirements

• At least six (06) passes at the G.C.E (O/L) examination including Mathematics and Science, or equivalent local /foreign qualification from a recognized University/institute, or
• Any equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate.
• Exemptions shall be granted for Part 1 courses (Level 2 – part 1), if students have followed the relevant subject in the GCE (A/L) and obtain at least of 40% overall marks at the Exemption Tests conducted by the OUSL.
• Over 18 years of age

Eligibility requirements for degree programmes offered by Faculty of Natural Sciences 

Bachelor of Science (Botany, Chemistry, Pure Maths, Applied Maths, Computer Science, Physics or Zoology)

A person who wants to follow the Bachelor of Science Degree shall be required to have;

1. A minimum of three (03) Pass grades at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination, Sri Lanka, in three (03) science subjects, from among  Biology, Chemistry, Combined Mathematics, Physics, Agricultural Science and Information and Communication Technology  OR,
2. PASS grades in all the courses offered in three (03) science subjects, from among Biology, Chemistry, Physics, and Combined Mathematics, in Advanced Certificate in Science offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka OR,
3. A combination of GCE (A/L) results in any sittings + courses passed from Advanced Certificate in Science can be used as admission requirements for BSc degree programme.

E.g. 1) If a student pass Biology in GCE (A/L) and passed chemistry and physics in ACS programme, the student can combine these results to admit for BSc degree programme.

E.g. 2) If a student pass Agricultural Science in GCE (A/L) and passed chemistry and biology in ACS programme, the student can combine these results to admit for BSc degree programme.

Eligibility requirements for degree programmes offered by Faculty of Engineering Technology

Bachelor of Science Honours in Engineering

You need to obtain the Advanced Certificate in Science Certificate or three passes in GCE (A/L) in one sitting (chemistry, physics, Combined mathematics);

1. If you have done your GCE A/L’s in the Physical Sciences Stream If you have one pass in GCE (A/L) / two passes in GCE (A/L), we recommend that you need to sit for exemption test for all three subjects (chemistry, physics, Combined mathematics) and PASS the exemption test for all three subjects.
2. Passing the exemption tests may give you the opportunity to claim up to 50% of course credits as exemptions (Level 2  – part 1 will be exempted), which may enable you to complete the ACS programme within a minimum one year period.
3. All other students who do not fall into both above categories, will have to register for Level 2 part 1 (first year) and pass it and could sit for Level 2 part 2 (second year) (can complete the ACS in two years)

Bachelor of Industrial Studies Honours

• Bachelor of Industrial Studies Honours Degree programme in the specializations of Apparel Production and Management, Textile Manufacturer, Fashion Design and Production Development

1. Obtained three passes in any stream, at the General Certificate of Education(Advanced Level) Examination, Sri Lanka, in one sitting, OR,
2. Obtained the Advanced Certificate in Science with courses from any three disciplines offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka

• Bachelor of Industrial Studies Honours Degree programme in Agriculture

1. Obtained three passes from Biology, Chemistry, Physics or Agriculture at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination, Sri Lanka, in one sitting, OR,
2. Obtained the Advanced Certificate in Science with courses in Biology, Physics, and Chemistry offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka.

Bachelor of Software Engineering

1. Obtained passes for any three subjects at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination, Sri Lanka, excluding General English and General Information Technology subjects, OR,
2. Completed any Advanced Certificate programme offered by the Open University
   of Sri Lanka,
