Department of Textile and Apparel Technology of the Open University of Sri Lanka offers a wide variety of programmes and courses in the fields of textiles and apparel, from Certificate to the Postgraduate levels. As these courses are conducted using Distance and Open Learning methodologies, they are ideally suited for those who are employed and those who wish to pursue lifelong learning. The department is also involved in extension activities to the industry in the form of short courses and consultancies. It is prepared to undertake tailor made courses for the individual needs of particular organisations and industrial institutions. The department is endowed with differently qualified staff with wide experience in various fields of studies. The department is also involved in research activities in textile, apparel and distance education fields.

Facilities

Laboratories

The Department of Textile and Apparel Technology provides the students with a wealth of hands –on learning opportunities, featuring 09 laboratories where students can get first-hands on experience in the areas ranging from textiles, clothing and fashion designing & product development.

Research Laboratory

Department research laboratory provides facilities for various research projects done by the department staff as well as student’s postgraduate research works. This laboratory is equipped with modern testing machines and equipment such as computer controlled tensile strength tester, computer controlled bursting strength tester, water-vapour permeability tester, flammability tester, digital crimp tester, digital warp-weft count tester, feather touch digital fabric thickness tester, latest Shirley stiffness tester etc.

CAD Laboratory

CAD laboratory provides the facilities for the students to practice the computer aided designing in fashion and apparel product designing. It has up to date professional CAD software such as Lectra and Gerber. This laboratory is equipped with 10 workstations facilitating students to get hands on experience in pattern drafting using the software.

Fashion Designing Laboratory

This laboratory is designed to facilitate the students to obtain the hands-on experience in various aspects in fashion designing and product development. Fashion designing laboratory has designed to familiarize students to understand key areas in the process of fashion designing which is practiced in the fashion & apparel industry. The laboratory is equipped with 25 workstations with fashion illustrations equipments It also includes fashion draping activities with dress forms and sewing machines

Physical Testing and Quality Analysis Lab

The physical testing laboratory is designed with equipments to measure or assess the important physical properties and characteristics of textile fibers, yarns, fabrics and also to do the testing to maintain the quality of garments. It is equipped with the tensile strength tester, tearing strength tester, abrasion tester, pilling box, water permeability and air permeability testers, crease recovery tester, GSM testing, stiffness tester, comb sorter, fibre bundle strength tester, micronaire tester, drapemeter, light fastness tester, lea strength tester, fully automated laundering machine with a tumble dryer etc.

Clothing Laboratory

Clothing laboratory is designed for students to familiarize with the machines and equipments used in the apparel industry. It consists of the latest versions of lock stitch, over lock, chain stitch feed off the arm, button holing & button attaching machines, cutting, pressing, fusing and finishing equipment. In addition to this, pattern construction facilities with dress forms are also available in this laboratory.
