Diploma in English

The Diploma in English Language and Literature is a one-year academic programme designed to meet the needs of students who wish to enhance their English language and communication skills. This programme also introduces students to the major literary genres: poetry, fiction and drama.

For Whom
This programme will be of special interest to –

  • Those interested in developing their communication skills in English and gaining a basic knowledge of English Literature.
  • Teachers of English who wish to enhance their understanding and appreciation of English language and literature.
  • Those interested in obtaining a higher academic qualification in English

The Selection Test for candidates who are required to sit for one will be held on 21st June 2026 from 11.00 AM – 12.30 PM in all Regional Centres of the OUSL.

Candidates must be over 18 and have fulfilled at least ONE of the following criteria.
a) Passed the OUSL Certificate in Professional English (After 2012) with a minimum of
3 “C” passes; or
b) Passed the OUSL Advanced Certificate in English for Business and Professional Communication Stage II, with a minimum of two B+ grades for Writing Skills and
Reading and Comprehension, and two B- grades for Listening & Speech Skills and Business Communication; or
c) Passed the OUSL Advanced Certificate in English for Professional Communication, with a minimum of two B grades for LEC2525 (Reading in the Professional
Environment) and LEC2527 (Writing Skills in the Workplace); or,
d) Obtained three (3) passes at the G.C.E. A/L and a pass at the Selection Test conducted
by the Department of Language Studies; or
e) Passed any Foundation Course offered by the OUSL and a pass at the Selection Test conducted by the Department of Language Studies; or

f) Obtained an equivalent or any other higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the OUSL and a pass at the Selection Test conducted by the Department of Language Studies.

Selection Test
The Selection Test for candidates who apply under criteria (d), (e), or (f) will be held on 21st June 2026 from 11.00 AM – 12.30 PM  as an on-site paper-based examination in all Regional Centres of the OUSL.

Registration Fee: Rs: 750.00
Facility Fee: Rs:2,500.00
Library Facility Fee: Rs: 100.00
*Tuition Fee: Rs: 71,100.00

TOTAL Rs: 74,200.00

Calculated at the rate of Rs. 2,370.00 per credit * 30.

Overseas Students
Tuition Fee : US$ 2,790*
 *: In addition to the above fee, are fundable deposit of US$ 1000 will be charged from the foreign students before the registration.  

Please note that only on- line application will be accepted for the Diploma in English Language and Literature Program.
Application fee could be paid online using a debit card / credit card. Payment in cash can also be made to any Regional / Study Centre of the OUSL.
