B.Sc. Degree programme is designed to contribute towards raising the general educational standards of the public by providing an opportunity for higher education in Science. This programme facilitates those already employed in the field, and late developers to acquire a B.Sc. degree in their own time at an affordable cost. It specifically aims to:

(a) provide an opportunity for persons to obtain a Science Degree and thereby improve their promotional/career prospects

(b) enable, particularly those already employed in the field, late developers, and those who could not avail themselves of higher education at the end of their secondary school career to obtain a degree

(c) enable any person to pursue a degree course in Science in their own time at an affordable cost

(d) combine courses within and outside the Faculty to suit a student’s interest or job requirements.

The B.Sc. programme offers courses at Levels 3, 4 and 5/6, equivalent to the 1st, 2nd, and 3rd years of the B.Sc. Degree programme of a conventional university. Depending on the qualifications, a student can choose three disciplines from Botany, Chemistry, Pure Maths, Applied Maths, Computer Science, Physics or Zoology for the B.Sc. Degree.

Enrolling to the BS Degree programme in the Faculty of Natural Sciences enables you to make a choice at the end of level 4 (second year) to continue in the OUSL or join up with the BSc Degree in the University of Essex, UK through progression link. At the completion of level 5 (third year) if you are eligible to register for a Special (Hons.) Degree in the OUSL, you will be able to gain direct entry to the MSc programmes in University of Essex, UK.

A person seeking admission to the BSc degree Programme leading to the award of the Degree of Bachelor of Science shall be required to have four (04) options of admission;

Option 1

a minimum of three (03) Pass grades at the General Certificate of Education (Advanced Level) Examination, Sri Lanka, in any of the following three (03) science subjects among

      • Biology
      • Chemistry
      • Combined Mathematics
      • Physics
      • Agricultural Science
      • Information and Communication Technology
      • Applied Mathematics (old syllabus)
      • Higher Mathematics (old syllabus)
      • Pure Mathematics (old syllabus)
      • Botany (old syllabus)
      • Mathematics (old syllabus)
      • Zoology (old syllabus)

Option 2

PASS grades in three (03) science following subjects in the Advanced Certificate in Science programme offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka

  • Combined Mathematics
  •  Biology
  •  Chemistry
  • Physics

 

Option 3

A minimum of three (03) PASS grades in three (03) science subjects, obtained from the combination of Option 1 and Option 2

Option 4

An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate (e.g. GCE Advanced Level – London can be considered with this option)

Fees for students registering for the BSc Degree Programme in the academic Year 2024/25 are as follows.

You will be receiving two separate vouchers in the Academic year 2024/25 ;

(i) The first instalment of  60% of Tuition fees for  BSc degree programme and  Facility Fees; (should pay fully during the registration) -Voucher 1

(ii) Second installement of 40% of Tuition fees + Laboratory fees (should pay 5 months after the Registration) -Voucher 2

 

 

Voucher 1

Three compulsory courses are recommended by the Government of Sri Lanka.

FDE3020 Empowering for Independent Learning (EfIL) – (Free)

LTE3406 English General Academic Purposes (EGAP) – (can get exemptions. Please refer the Table 3 of the Guidebook for more details)

CSE3214 ICT Skills – Rs. 3000/= (Please refer Table 2 of the Guidebook for more details)

Total package is LKR 8,500/= but you need to pay only LKR 5,500/= with the first instalment

Breakdown of the first Instalment (Voucher 1)

(i) Compulsory Courses (LKR 5,500/=)

(ii) Tuition fee (LKR 37,584/=)

  1. Tuition Fee: Rs. 2,740/= per credit
  2. Number of Credits of regular courses to be offered/registered per year – between 8-30 (Tuition fees for the academic year may differ depending on the number of credits that you register and can adjust the voucher).

As, the first instalment, BSc students will initially receive a voucher corresponding to 24 credits. For this first instalment you will have to pay 60% of Tuition fees (LKR. 2,740/=x 24 x 0.60 = LKR.39,456/=). The payment may be reduced at the time of registration if you wish to register for a lesser number of credits.

(ii) Facility Fees (LRK 4,200/=)

Refundable Lab Deposit      –     LKR   1,100.00

Breakdown of the Second Instalment of the Tuition Fees (Voucher 2) – should be paid after five months of registration

The second instalment, which is 40% of tuition fees, is due approximately 5 months after the registration (approximately October 2023). The amount would be LKR. 26,304/ + Laboratory fees (If you have registered for laboratory-based courses)

Note:

If you wish to cancel your registration and withdraw from the programme of study, you will be required to inform the Assistant Registrar/Student Affairs by a letter. A refund will be made only if you notice before the Add/Drop date.
