Chair & Senior Professor of Civil Engineering

Professor Kolita Weerasekera graduated from University of Moratuwa in 1981 with a B.Sc. degree in Civil Engineering. He earned his Masters in Engineering, specialising in Transport Engineering from the University of New South Wales, Sydney Australia, and subsequently earned his Doctor of Philosophy in Civil Engineering from the same university. In 1997, Prof. Weerasekera was awarded the Best Technical Paper Award in the Urban Traffic category for his research paper titled “The ‘Dark Side’ of Traffic Calming Devices – Is it Serious?” based on his PhD work at the 13th International Road Federation (IRF) World Meeting in Toronto, Ont. Canada. He served as a tutor attached to the School of Civil Engineering at University of New South Wales from 1995 to 1998 prior to join the Open University of Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer in March 1998.

Currently Professor Weerasekera is the Chair and Senior Professor of Civil Engineering (on merit) in the Department of Civil Engineering, in the Faculty of Engineering Technology at the Open University of Sri Lanka. He has presented his research work in many international research conferences and journals, countries including India, Australia, Philippines, Canada, Brunei, South Korea, Pakistan, Malaysia, Indonesia, Mauritius and USA.

After graduating as a Civil Engineer, initially he served in the Mahaweli Development Board (MDB) as a project engineer attached to Maduru Oya Irrigation project and later as a design engineer, then at the Road Development Authority (RDA) as a senior traffic engineer. While serving RDA he followed a Senior Course on Transport Engineering at the Transport Training Centre, University of Philippines under a JICA scholarship. Subsequently he served as a traffic engineer attached to the Randwick City Council, Sydney, Australia.

Professor Weerasekera is a Chartered Engineer, International Professional Engineer and a Fellow of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka. He has served as a member of the Accreditation Board of the Institution of Engineers Sri Lanka (IESL) from 2010 to 2015. IESL is a full signatory to the Washington Accord (which is an international agreement among bodies responsible for accrediting engineering degree programs). Professor Weerasekera is also a member of the Institution of Engineers Australia, American Society of Civil Engineers, and Institution of Highways and Transport, United Kingdom.

He has authored two text books on highway and traffic engineering; “Towards Better Roads” and “An Introduction to Traffic Engineering”. As a transport engineering expert he has actively contributed in many nation building projects as well. Professor Weerasekera had his primary and secondary education at Ananda College, Colombo 10.
