In Sri Lanka, many businesses fall under the small business category, with most located outside Colombo. Small enterprises play a key role in generating rural employment. Recognizing the socio-economic value of these ventures, the government has implemented policies to support and promote small businesses. Despite favorable conditions, many of these ventures experience failure or slow growth, often due to poor selection processes and inadequate management.
To address these critical issues, the Open University of Sri Lanka offers a program focused on the selection and management of small businesses. Designed as a training tool, this program is tailored for aspiring entrepreneurs, managers, and other business support staff.
Advanced Certificate in Apparel Technology (ACAT)

This programme is designed to provide an opportunity to those engaged in the relevant industry to gain an in-depth knowledge in the subject of specialisation. Obtaining six passes at G.C.E.(O/L) examination including Mathematics and the first language is required for admission to the Study Programme.

The Certificate in Social Sciences is a distance education program offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka for employed adults and school leavers over 18 without formal secondary education. Advanced Certificate in Science programme (ACS)

The Advanced Certificate in Science Programme (ACS) is designed to encourage those without the basic entry qualifications to pursue higher studies in Bachelor of Degree, Bachelor of Engineering Technology (BIT) and Bachelor of Industrial Studies (BIS) programmes to achieve such qualifications.
Courses are delivered according to the Level 2 of the Sri Lanka Qualification Framework (SLQF) (equivalent to GCE (Advanced Level).
The credit content of courses is thirty (30) per each level, which will include six (6) courses, each of five (5) credit weightage totaling up to ten (10) credit of courses each for a discipline. The main disciplines are Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics. The courses will be offered by the Faculty of Natural Sciences.
