Professor Dr. J.D. Careemdeen is a Professor of Sociology of Education at the Department of Secondary and Tertiary Education, Faculty of Education, The Open University of Sri Lanka. He has over 17 years of experience in teaching, research, and teacher education, including more than a decade as a senior lecturer and trainer of educators.
Prof. Careemdeen earned his PhD in Sociology of Education from the National University of Malaysia (UKM), where his research examined socio-environmental support and socio-educational participation in enhancing educational well-being among secondary school students in Sri Lanka. He also holds a Master of Education and a Bachelor of Education from the University of Colombo, and a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Peradeniya in Arabic Language, Islamic Civilization, and Geography. He is additionally certified in Teaching in Higher Education (OUSL) and in English proficiency (University of Colombo).
He has authored numerous research articles in indexed international journals (WoS, Scopus, ERA) on educational well-being, socio-educational participation, and the intersection of social factors and learning. His recent publications include the development of frameworks for student learning support, studies on teacher–student interactions, and analyses of educational equity in Sri Lanka. He is also the author of Contemporary Sociology of Education and Opportunities for Learning 4.0 (Read More Publications, 2024).
Prof. Careemdeen has served as keynote speaker at international conferences and has appeared in national media programs discussing Sri Lanka’s education system and educational reforms. He has supervised PhD and MPhil research students in areas related to educational sociology, teacher development, and moral education.
His contributions extend to major research projects funded by the Commonwealth of Learning (COL), Canada, focusing on ICT integration and digital education leadership. He has developed course materials in educational psychology, technology, counselling, and guidance, and contributed to teacher education curriculum development.
He is a lifetime member of the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Education and the Sri Lanka Association for the Advancement of Science. Prof. Careemdeen’s Scopus Author ID is 57256869800, and his ORCID ID is 0000-0002-4414-5389.
