Master of Teacher Education (MTE)

Introduction

Welcome to the MTE Programme.

The goal of the Master of Teacher Education (MTE) programme is to develop professional competencies and practices among teacher educators. The target group of the MTE consists mainly of Teacher Educators who serve in institutions under the Ministry of Education, Faculties/ Departments of Education in Universities and Lecturers attached to the National Institute of Education. The MTE programme comprises six regular courses and a portfolio project. Courses in the MTE programme are built around authentic learning scenarios. The minimum duration of the programme is one year consisting of two semesters, and the programme is offered in Sinhala, Tamil and English medium. There will be no final written examination in any of the regular courses, and essential readings, additional readings, and multimedia resources will be the major support in learning.

Aim and Objectives

The goal of the Master of Teacher Education programme is to develop among teacher educators’ competencies and practices in relation to the following areas:

teaching and learning strategies, including assessment of learning outcomes.
design, development, and use of educational technologies in teaching and learning.
design, development, and evaluation of curricular and curriculum related activities.
management and leadership in teaching, learning and related educational activities.
research and evaluation of teaching, learning and related educational activities, and
teaching as a profession and the professional roles and responsibilities of teachers.

The Target Group

The target group for which the programme is particularly intended consists mainly of teacher educators, serving in institutions under the Ministry of Education and Faculties/ Departments of Education in Universities.

Admission

Obtained a Bachelor’s degree in Education from a recognized University, or
Obtained a bachelor’s degree and the Postgraduate Diploma in Education from a recognized University, or
secured any equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate,

and

Should be serving at present as a

i. Academic staff member of a recognized University,
Or
ii. Lecturer of a National College of Education,
Or
iii. Lecturer of a Teacher Training Collage,
Or
iv. Officer engaged in Teacher Education in the National Institute of Education,
Or
v. Principal of a Government/Government Approved school (Private/International)

vi. In-Service Advisor of a Teaching Centre/Ministry of Education/ A Provincial Ministry of Education

The programme is conducted in English, Sinhala, and Tamil media.

All applicants should have a good command in English, irrespective of the Medium.

Selection of candidates for the programme will be done either by a written test or an interview.
