My primary and secondary school education was at St Patrick’s College Jaffna, Sri Lanka (1965 – 1978). I started my undergraduate studies in 1980 at University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka (UOJ) and obtained my BSc (Hons) in 1984, specializing in Physics. I joined the Eastern University, Sri Lanka (EUSL) in 1986. I was awarded a British Council Scholarship in 1987 (under the EUSL – University of Sussex UK link programme) to study for a doctorate at the University of Sussex, supervised by A Low Thomson. I received my Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) from University of Sussex, UK in 1991. My speciality is in the field of Low Temperature Physics. I returned to Sri Lanka in 1991 and continued my service at EUSL. At EUSL, I served in different capacities including as a Head of the Department of Physics (Feb 2001 – Oct 2001 & Feb 1992 – Feb1998) and Dean of the Faculty of Science (Oct 2001 – Oct 2004). I was awarded a Commonwealth Fellowship in 1998 and moved to University of Sussex on sabbatical.  There, I worked as a Visiting Research Fellow in Experimental Physics (1 Aug 1998 – 31 July1999). I received my MInstP and CPhys title from Institute of Physics (UK) in 1999. During my second sabbatical I was attached to the OUSL (1 Nov 2004 – 31 Oct 2005) and worked as a Senior Lecturer Gr I. Subsequently, I joined the Vavuniya Campus of the University of Jaffna (VCUOJ) in 2006 and served their till 2009. At VCUOJ, I served as Head of the Department of Physical Science and Dean of the Faculty of Applied Science for shorter period. Later, I joined the OUSL in 2009 and promoted to the post of Professor in Physics (Oct. 2009 to date). I have over twenty five years of research and teaching experience in physics. My research in the field of Low Temperature Physics involves in studying the Physical properties of Liquid Helium and Liquid Hydrogen in confined geometries and Heat Capacity techniques to investigate the possibility of Superfluidity in para hydrogen (a boson system). Currently I am interested in fabricating nano-crystalline Si and SiO2 from locally available post-harvest waste materials for industrial applications. In addition to my academic activities at Universities, I actively involved in promoting physics education in Sri Lanka since 1992. I enjoy sharing my passion for physics and research with members of the general public, occasionally giving talks in schools and, where possible, organizing or taking part in outreach events for students and teachers.
