Composting is a remarkable and innate biological process, characterized by its capacity to convert organic waste into nutrient-rich soil conditioners. It represents a sustainable, environmentally responsible, and cost-effective methodology that emulates the inherent recycling mechanisms found in nature. The Open University of Sri Lanka has taken a significant step by establishing a compost hut to streamline and enhance the composting process efficiently. This sustainable approach simplifies waste management procedures while concurrently obviating the necessity for chemical fertilizers.

The university diligently undertakes daily cleaning efforts within its premises, thus ensuring the maintenance of a cleaner and more aesthetically pleasing environment. The collected green waste is systematically directed to both the compost hut and designated composting areas, expediting the decomposition process. Approximately 3,000 kilograms of green waste are generated on a monthly basis, and through the meticulous composting procedures in place, approximately 300 kilograms of nutrient-rich fertilizer are produced. These fertilizers are employed to nourish and enhance the growth of the university’s plants, thus effectively reducing the dependence on chemical fertilizers. Moreover, this sustainable process plays a pivotal role in diminishing greenhouse gas emissions and lightening the load on waste disposal systems, thereby leading the Open University toward a more sustainable and ecologically responsible future.
