Message from the Dean

Warm greetings from the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences.
As the people’s university, the Open University of Sri Lanka stands committed to ensuring that education remains a right, not a privilege. Our Faculty is dedicated to advancing the fields of humanities and social sciences with a deep sense of responsibility to the people we serve. We recognize that education holds the power to bridge divides, nurture understanding, and create pathways toward a more just and inclusive society.
In our mission to bring education to the people’s doorsteps, the Faculty humanizes and democratizes learning. We reach beyond traditional boundaries to create opportunities for individuals from all walks of life — from urban centers to the most remote corners of the country. Through the Open and Distance Learning system, we make higher education accessible to those who may have been excluded by circumstance, ensuring that every learner has the chance to realize their fullest potential.
Our academic programmes are designed not only to develop knowledge and professional competence but also to cultivate empathy, critical thinking, and ethical awareness. We believe that humanities and social sciences play a vital role in strengthening social cohesion and fostering a sense of shared humanity across Sri Lanka’s rich tapestry of ethnic, cultural, and religious diversity.
As a Faculty, we continue to uphold the values of openness, equity, and inclusion — principles that define the spirit of the Open University. By empowering individuals and communities through learning, we contribute to the broader goal of building a more compassionate and democratic society.
Looking ahead, we remain devoted to nurturing citizens who can think independently, engage responsibly, and act with humanity in service to the nation and the world.
