Prof. D.D.G.L. Dahanayaka holds a B.Sc. and M.Phil. from the University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka, and a Ph.D. with postdoctoral training from Ibaraki University, Japan. He previously served for over 12 years as a Scientist at the National Aquatic Resources Research and Development Agency (NARA), specializing in remote sensing applications for coastal and inland water environmental monitoring.
He is currently a Professor in the Department of Zoology at the Open University of Sri Lanka, an Honorary Visiting Research Professor at the National Institute of Fundamental Studies (NIFS), Sri Lanka, and a Research Fellow at INTI International University, Malaysia.
Prof. Dahanayaka has published more than 250 scientific articles and reports, including over 50 papers in peer-reviewed international journals, and has delivered invited presentations in several countries including the USA, Japan, Vietnam, Indonesia, Pakistan, and Cambodia. His research focuses on environmental science, remote sensing, climate change and blue carbon ecosystems, and he actively collaborates with international research partners while contributing to research leadership, teaching, and scientific advisory activities.
