The Department of English Language Teaching (DELT) of The Open University of Sri Lanka conducted a workshop titled “Understanding Action Research: A Collaborative Approach to Problem-Solving and Improvement” on 29th July 2025. Facilitated by Ms. Srianthie Salgado, an experienced educator and researcher in English Language Teaching, the session was organized under the department’s Research Cell as part of its ongoing efforts to foster a strong, research-driven academic environment.
Opening the session, Ms. Salgado introduced the concept of action research within a broader institutional framework, defining it as a participatory, cyclical process applicable across professional and educational settings. She emphasized its role in addressing real-world challenges through a structured cycle of planning, action, observation, and reflection.
The workshop then focused on classroom action research, particularly its potential to improve teaching strategies, student engagement, and learning outcomes. Participants were guided through the key stages of the process, from identifying a focus area and designing research questions to implementing interventions, collecting and analysing data, and reflecting on findings. An interactive group activity further enriched the session, as staff members collaboratively identified research focus areas, a task that encouraged critical thinking, teamwork, and meaningful discussion.
The workshop concluded with reflections on the practical relevance of action research. It successfully reaffirmed its value in enhancing educational practice and institutional development, while inspiring participants to adopt a mindset of reflection, innovation, and inquiry in their academic and professional journeys.
