The Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD) at The Open University of Sri Lanka is excited to announce the 3rd program of “I Am Eco-Smart 2025″ programme scheduled for 1st December 2025 (during November school vacation) for nursery & school children whose parents (academic/non-academic) working in the OUSL. This activity-based event attempt to immerse children in various aspects of sustainable development through engaging and interactive sessions.
This program will provide an opportunity for participants to learn, appreciate, and respect the natural environment as well as the impact of their actions on the environment, environmental pollution, reusing, recycling, food waste reduction, water conservation, composting and gardening, alternative energies, value of the food, and the importance of volunteering. Talent Show will be conducted. Further all participants will be awarded a certificate of participation issued by the university.
AIM
To cultivate a sense of environmental responsibility and encourage sustainable lifestyles among children from an early age.
OBJECTIVES
- To create environmental awareness and inspire positive behavior towards sustainability
- To promote practical understanding of eco-friendly practices such as waste reduction, recycling, and biodiversity conservation
- To provide hands-on experiences through interactive activities and field visits

FIELD VISIT DETAILS (FOR GRADES 6–13)
After the inauguration ceremony at OUSL, students will be divided into two groups:
- Group 1: Visit to Beddagana Wetland Park – to learn about biodiversity, wetland ecosystems, and conservation.
- Group 2: Visit to Karadiyana Waste Management Facility – to observe solid waste management practices and understand waste segregation and recycling.
Lunch will be arranged at the university premises, after which the two groups will exchange sites so all participants gain exposure to both learning environments.
