On September 26, 2025, a beach cleanup was conducted at Ambakandawila Beach in Chilaw as part of the Less Plastic Policy initiative. The event saw the participation of around 150 individuals, including university students, staff from Cinnamon Hotels, and staff from Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department (CCD).Together, they successfully collected approximately 15-20 kg of polyethylene and plastic waste from the beach area. This important environmental effort was made possible through funding from Cinnamon Hotels, while Coast Conservation and Coastal Resource Management Department facilitated the program, demonstrating a strong commitment to reducing plastic pollution and promoting sustainable practices in coastal areas.
Objectives
- Reduce Plastic Pollution: To minimize the amount of polyethylene and plastic waste in coastal areas, promoting cleaner and healthier beaches.
- Raise Awareness: To increase public awareness about the harmful effects of plastic pollution on marine ecosystems and local communities.

- Collaborative Action: To create a platform for public and private sectors, such as university students, CCD, and Cinnamon Hotels, to work together in addressing environmental challenges and making a positive impact.
Support Policy Initiatives: To contribute to the goals of the Less Plastic Policy program and align with national and global efforts to reduce plastic waste and its environmental impact.
