Dr. (Mrs.) D.S. Wijerathne earned her Bachelor of Design (B.Des) degree with first-class honors, specializing in Fashion Design, from the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Moratuwa, Sri Lanka (2000–2004). She completed her MPhil at the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), focusing on “Fashion Illustration Communication System,” and obtained her Certificate in Teaching in Higher Education (CTHE) from OUSL in 2014. In 2021, she earned her Ph.D. from Tiangong University, Tianjin, China, specializing in “Smart Clothing & Sensor Development” in 2021.  She served as the Head of the Department of Textile & Apparel Technology at OUSL for three years, concluding her tenure on March 1, 2024.

After earning her first degree, Dr. (Mrs.) D.S. Wijerathne worked as a Visiting Lecturer (2004–2005) in the Department of Architecture at the University of Moratuwa. She then gained industry experience as a fashion designer and product developer at the Artolife sample room in Nugegoda from 2005 to 2007. In 2008, she joined the Department of Textile and Apparel Technology at the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL), Nawala, as a Consultant and Temporary Lecturer to assist in developing the Fashion Design and Product Development degree program. She was appointed as a Lecturer (Probationary) in 2009, later promoted to Senior Lecturer (Grade II) in 2014, and Senior Lecturer (Grade I) in 2020. Additionally, since 2015, she has served as a Visiting Lecturer for the Textile and Wearable Art degree program at the University of Visual and Performing Arts, contributing to multiple academic years.
