The 1 st International Conference on Marine Science and Sustainability (ICMSS 2026) was successfully held on 8–9 June 2026 at Waters Edge, Colombo. The conference was organized by the Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD), The Open University of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA).
The inaugural ceremony brought together academics, researchers, industry professionals, policymakers, and government officials from Sri Lanka and abroad. The event was graced by Hon. Dr. Dammika Patabendi, Minister of Environment, as the Chief Guest, while Senior Professor P.M.C. Thilakarathne, Vice Chancellor of The Open University of Sri Lanka, attended as the Guest of Honour. The keynote address was delivered by Professor Kamal Ranatunga of
the University of Sri Jayewardenepura.
The conference was jointly chaired by Dr. Samantha Gunasekara, Chairman of the Marine Environment Protection Authority (MEPA); Professor Sevvandi Jayakody, Chair Professor at Wayamba University of Sri Lanka; and Dr. Yohan Mahagamage, Director of the Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD).
Following the inauguration, a panel discussion was conducted to examine critical issues, emerging challenges, and innovative solutions in marine science and sustainability. The two-day conference featured four parallel technical sessions, providing an important platform for researchers to present and discuss their latest scientific findings and innovations.
ICMSS 2026 received 130 research submissions under eight thematic tracks from researchers representing Sri Lanka and several other countries, including India, Bangladesh, and China. Following a rigorous review process, 110 abstracts were selected for presentation and publication in the conference proceedings.
A total of 17 plenary speakers and session chairs, together with 34 session co-chairs, contributed to the successful conduct of the technical sessions. In recognition of outstanding research contributions, 17 Best Scientific Study Awards were presented across the conference sessions.
The successful completion of ICMSS 2026 highlights the growing importance of interdisciplinary collaboration, scientific innovation, and international knowledge exchange in advancing marine science and promoting sustainable development. The conference strengthened partnerships among researchers, practitioners, and policymakers committed to the conservation and sustainable management of marine and coastal resources.
