Advancing Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy Education through National Curriculum Reform

The introduction of Entrepreneurship and Financial Literacy as a new subject in Sri Lanka’s national school curriculum, commencing in 2026, is designed to cultivate entrepreneurial mindsets and enhance financial awareness among students from Grades 6 to 11. This initiative is in alignment with the country’s ongoing education reform efforts, emphasizing the importance of fostering innovation-driven thinking, financial literacy, and entrepreneurial capabilities from an early age. This curriculum aims to contribute to both personal development and the broader economic growth of the nation.

In preparation for the nationwide launch, the National Institute of Education (NIE) has implemented a capacity-building program aimed at enhancing teacher readiness. This initiative focuses on developing over 500 teachers as Master Trainers across all nine provinces, emphasizing subject knowledge and learner-centered teaching methods. Dr. Janaka Heenkenda from the Entrepreneurship Development and Consultancy Unit (EDCU) at the Faculty of Management Studies, The Open University of Sri Lanka, served as the resource person for this initiative, sharing insights on aligning school entrepreneurship education with higher education and community enterprise development.
