The Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD) of The Open University of Sri Lanka successfully conducted the 3rd “I Am Eco-Smart 2025” one-day activity-based programme on 15 December 2025, during the December school vacation. The programme was organized for nursery and school children of academic and non-academic staff members of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
The objective of the programme was to nurture environmental responsibility and eco-friendly attitudes among children at an early age by providing hands-on learning experiences related to sustainable development. The event was carefully designed to be interactive, engaging, and age-appropriate, enabling children to learn through participation rather than passive instruction.
Throughout the day, participants were introduced to a wide range of environmental themes, including environmental pollution, waste segregation, reusing and recycling practices, food waste reduction, water conservation, composting and home gardening, alternative and renewable energy sources, the value of food, and the importance of volunteering and community responsibility. These themes were delivered through interactive discussions, practical demonstrations, group activities, creative exercises, and guided learning sessions.
Special attention was given to encouraging children to understand how their daily actions impact the environment and how simple behavioural changes can contribute to a more sustainable future. Activities were structured to promote teamwork, creativity, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills while fostering respect for nature.
A Talent Show was also conducted as part of the programme, providing children with an opportunity to showcase their talents through singing, dancing, drama, poetry, and other creative performances. This segment added enthusiasm and enjoyment to the event while reinforcing environmental messages in a fun and expressive manner.
At the conclusion of the programme, all participants were awarded certificates of participation issued by The Open University of Sri Lanka, in recognition of their active involvement and commitment to eco-smart practices. The programme concluded successfully with positive feedback from children and parents, reaffirming the importance of early environmental education in shaping responsible future citizens.
