Advanced Certificate in Science
Advanced Certificate in Science programme (ACS) provides an alternative equivalent qualification to the physical science stream of the G. C.E. (Advanced Level) Examination. According to the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF), this is a SLQF level 2 programme with a total of 60 credits requiring 2 academic years of full time learning by the students. The courses of the study programme are offered jointly by the Faculty of Natural Sciences and the Faculty of Engineering Technology through the Foundation Academic Unit.
The courses in the disciplines of Biology, Chemistry, Physics and Mathematics are available during the 2-year period. Successful completion of the ACS Programme will allow students to enter the Bachelor of Science degree programme and Bachelor of Technology Honours in Engineering degree programme of the Open University of Sri Lanka. Those who expect to enroll Bachelor of Technology Honours in engineering degree programme need to complete the ACS programme in maximum of 2 years taking courses in the disciplines of Physics, Mathematic and Chemistry.
Objective
The objective of the ACS programme is to provide the learners an opportunity to acquire knowledge and skills on par with that of General Certificate in Education (Advanced Level) in physical science stream, hence enabling them to enroll science and engineering study programmes leading to the qualifications at SLQF level 3 (Diploma), level 4 (Higher Diploma), level 5 (bachelor’s degree), and level 6 (Bachelors Honours degree) conducted by the OUSL. This qualification might be recognized by other higher educational institutes as an alternative qualification to enroll the degree study programmes.

To enroll for the ACS programme the applicants should have the following qualifications.
- At least six (06) passes at the G.C.E (O/L) examination including Mathematics and Science, OR,
- Any other equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the Senate.
Exemptions are granted for year 1 courses, if students have followed the relevant subjects in the G.C.E. (A/L) examination and obtain at least of 40% overall marks at the Exemption Test conducted by the OUSL.
A student having a minimum of simple pass (S) for a relevant subject in the GCE (A/L) examination may request exemptions for year 1 and 2 courses of the relevant discipline of the Advanced Certificate in Science programme. However, still the student needs to acquire a minimum of 50% of the total credit (i.e. 30 credits) by following the courses of the Advanced Certificate in Science programme
According to the G.C.E. (A/L) stream, the students can select courses amounting to maximum of 15 credits (3 courses) in each Semester.

The tuition fee can be paid in installments. The first installment should be paid at the time of registration with the registration fee and the facility fee.
