Mr. Perera obtained his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of Colombo, Colombo, Sri Lanka, in 1981. He then joined the Department of Physics of the University of Colombo as a Demonstrator. Later he joined Volanka Limited, an export company dealing with coir products, as a Management Trainee. In November 1983 he joined the Open University of Sri Lanka as a Demonstrator. He later became an Educational Assistant in the Department of Textile Technology in June 1984. He obtained the Master of Arts in Distance Education from the Indira Gandhi National Open University, New Delhi, India in 1998. He obtained the Master of Science degree in Clothing Technology at the University of Moratuwa in 2005. He was promoted to the post of Lecturer in the department of Textile and Apparel Technology in April 2005.
