Visit & distinguished lecture by Dr. Nick Aldred on 11.05.2023

On 11^th May 2023, Dr. Nick Aldred, Director of Recruitment in School of Life Sciences and Senior Lecturer in Marine Biology at the University of Essex, UK visited the OUSL accompanied by Ms. Thanuja Raveendren, Recruitment and Development Officer – Sri Lanka, University of Essex.

During his visit, Dr. Nick Aldred met with the Vice-Chancellor Prof. P. M. C. Thilakarathne for a cordial discussion. The Director of the IRU, Dr. Prasad Senadheera warmly welcomed him on behalf of the OUSL and gave a brief overview of our university. Here especially, the building up of the partnership between the two institutes over the years, and especially the signing of the progression agreement for the BSc Linked degree programmes that took place on 22^nd February 2023 was highlighted. To mark this event, the brochure designed for the linked degree programme was presented to the Vice-Chancellor, Dr. Nick Aldred and Ms. Thanuja Raveendren by the Director of IRU.

Following that, Dr. Nick presented a Distinguished Lecture organized by the IRU on the title of “An overview of the School of Life Sciences at the University of Essex” at CETMe. The lecture was attended by Director of Research, various academics and staff of the departments of Botany and Zoology, Faculty of Natural Sciences. Thereafter he spent time discussing various questions and ideas arising from the audience participants.

A timely and important talk about Sri Lanka’s own marine/ coastal diversity was given by Dr. D. D. G. L. Dahanayaka of the department of Zoology.
