K.E.D. Sumanasiri graduated with B.Sc. Engineering (Hons) degree in specializing in the field of Mechanical Engineering with Second class (Upper division) from the University of Peradeniya in 1984. He joined Dept of Mechanical Engineering, University of Peradeniya as an Assistant Lecturer in January 1985. He was granted study leave as a probationary lecturer to pursue postgraduate studies in Belgium in August 1988. He completed his M.Eng degree in Katholieke Universiteit Leuven, Belgium in July 1990 and obtained PhD from the same university in June 1995. The title of the thesis was: Processing and Properties of SiC – fibre reinforced glass and ceramic composites. He resumed his work as a Senior Lecturer in Mechanical Engineering, University of Peradeniya In July 1995. He served as the head of the department from September 1996 to March 2000. In Jan 2003, he left to Papua New Guinea on his sabbatical leave and resigned from University of Peradeniya in March 2005. He was attached to the Department of Mechanical Engineering at the Papua New Guinea University of Technology from 2003 to September 2013 as a Senior Lecturer and served as the acting head of the department during the last six months. During his career, Dr. Sumanasiri has taught courses in Thermodynamics, Mechanics of Machines, Solid Mechanics, Automobile engineering, glasses, ceramics and composites, engineering drawing, Machine design, Engineering materials and metallurgy, Non destructive evaluation, Failure analysis, Renewable and alternative energy at undergraduate as well as at postgraduate levels. He has published papers and has attended conferences on topics related to Materials and Energy. Currently he is attached to the Department of Mechanical Engineering in the Open University of Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer and is the postgraduate coordinator in Industrial Engineering program. He is engaged with research on Fatigue and Fracture, failure analysis, Energy efficiency, and Maintenance management.
