Bachelor of Arts in Youth and Community Development

The Degree of Bachelor of Arts in Youth and Community Development will be valuable for people in diverse professions. Primarily, this programme will target those involved in youth work both in the public and private sector. Career paths for youth workers include youth-related health interventions, youth vocational education, leadership and civic participation and financial services. It is also a convenient option for those seeking career advancement or career changes in the broad fields of youth and community work. Further, it serves as an option for those who are interested in broadening their knowledge in the field of community and young life as a precondition for engaging meaningfully in society. The BA in Youth and Community Development also targets those who wish to pursue a career in the community and development sector either as practitioners, policy makers or researchers.

PROGRAMME OUTCOMES

Outcomes of the programme could be achieved at three levels: Diploma, Higher Diploma and Degree level. According to the SLQF qualification descriptors the following outcomes will be achieved by those who successfully complete the required number of course credits at the said three exit levels

Learning Outcomes expected at Diploma Levels in Youth and Community Development

The candidates who complete SLQF Level 3 courses amounting to a total of 30 course credits and a minimum of six (6) course credits in Continuing Education courses may be awarded with the Diploma in Youth and Community Development.

After completing SLQF Level 4 with 60 course credits and a minimum of eight (8) course credits in Continuing Education courses the candidates may be awarded the Higher Diploma in Youth and Community Development.

Students who complete the Level 3 and 4 will be able to,

a)    Equip themselves with necessary knowledge, skills and attitudes to critically intervene in the areas of Youth and Community Development.

b)    Enhance their understanding of youth problems in the context of community development.

c)    Be a professional youth worker.

Outcomes expected at BA in Youth and Community Development.

The candidates who complete SLQF Levels 3, 4, and 5 amounting to a total of ninety (90) course credits and a minimum of eleven (11) course credits in Continuing Education Courses may be awarded with the BA in Youth and Community Development. After completing the specified course credits in Level 5 the degree holder will be able to achieve following competencies.

a)    Build coherent arguments using theories, concepts and data to present a position or perspective in relation to contemporary social issues and problems.

b)    Use appropriate skills in communicating ideas and arguments creatively and insightfully in relevant contexts

c)    Demonstrate ability to engage in learning independently and with self-motivation

d)    Conduct surveys and research to study the contemporary situation of the community and young people.

Graduate profile Expected at Degree Level:

a)    Competent and enthusiastic personality, who wishes to get employed in any type of youth and Community Development.

b)    Effective and skillful communicator, social activist and mediator in youth and community development issues and programmes.

c)    Flexible and responsive when addressing the challenges in contemporary community development issues and work

d)    A confident team leader and team player

e)    Play a catalytic role in the field of youth development

Applicants who seek admission to the programme are required to have the following qualifications.

• Completion of 30 Course Credits at Level 2 or above from any programme offered by an approved Higher Education Institution, or
• Three (3) passes at the G.C.E (A/L) Examination in any subject stream, or
• Completion of NVQ Level 4 or accredited work experience equivalent to NVQ Level 4, or
• An equivalent or higher qualification acceptable to the OUSL Senate.
