Diploma in Food Science


The Diploma in Food Science program provides the basic principles used in Food Science and their usage in food industry. It is specifically designed for the personnel who are already employed in the food industry, school leavers (with GCE A/L) seeking employment in food industry and the personnel who wish to develop their knowledge and skills in a comprehensive range of aspects covering Food Science. This Diploma programme will provide an opportunity for school leavers as well as personnel in food industry or those seeking employment in food industry to get a basic knowledge or update knowledge in Food Science.

The Diploma programme will be of one academic year duration and the academic standard will be that of Level 3 of the Sri Lanka Qualifications Framework (SLQF).

Course content

Semester 1            

CYD3310  Fundamentals of Chemistry and Biology for Food Science 
CYD3612  Introduction to Food Science and Constituents of Food
CYD3313  Food Microbiology and Food Spoilage
ADD3200  Basic Mathematics and Statistics for Food Science

Semester 2     

CYD3516 Laboratory Sessions in Food Science   
CYD3614 Food Preservation and Processing
CYD3215 Quality Assurance in Food Industry
CYD3317 Novel Applications in Food Industry

The credit content of the Programme is thirty-30 (1500 Notional Learning Hours).

Practical hours included in the programme (laboratory course, CYD3516 + case study in CYD3317) will account to about 400 hrs ( ≈25% ).

  Foundation certificates in Science, courses in Foundation in Science with 

Chemistry, offered by the Open University of Sri Lanka, OR 

  • Three (03) passes at the G.C.E (A/L) in Technology stream with Bio systems technology OR
  • Three (03) Passes in combination of a) and b) above OR
  • Followed upto G.C.E(A/L) in Science stream with a minimum of three years’ experience in Food / Food related Industry (at technical or managerial level) OR
  • An equivalent or a higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
