Advanced Certificate in Applied Earth Sciences

Advanced Certificate in Applied Earth Sciences programme (SLQF -Level 2) is designed to create the awareness of the importance of earth resources in Sri Lanka through identifying, discovering, value addition and sustainable utilization of it among the personnel interested and/or engaged in earth science related fields and activities.

The overall aim of this programme is to a new generation of the skills and knowledge to sustainably and responsibly locate, extract and process the Earth’s resources. The programme integrates fundamental knowledge with applied technology. In the programme, the student will learn how to approach issues related to the challenges of raw materials technology and geo-engineering in an imaginative and resourceful manner.

The specific aims of the programme are to:

  1. Provide the student an opportunity to learn the basic earth sciences which includes diverse groups of minerals, rocks, mineral resources and formation of mineral deposits.
  2. Provide education on the science of the earth and its environment, the exploration and exploitation of mineral resources.
  3. Giving a theoretical and practical knowledge provided in the Study Programme with new knowledge in findings of earth sciences.
  4. Introduce modern technologies where earth materials are made to produce valuable value-added products.
  5. Promote the development of technology in order to improve the local capability in exploiting the nation’s vast mineral resources to the socio-economic activities of the nation.
  6. Use experiences gained in the practical exercises, field or laboratory work to develop a sound interest in solving the problems from theoretical teaching in earth sciences.
  7. Provide a higher qualification that will enable to pursue further academic studies or gain employment or career promotions in the field of earth sciences.

Entry Qualifications

A person seeking admission to the programme leading to the award of the Advanced Certificate in Applied Earth Sciences shall be required to have:

a. Obtained a minimum of six (06) Passes with two Credit Passes, including Mathematics and First Language, at the General Certificate of Education (Ordinary Level) Examination or equivalent or a higher qualification

Or

b. Successfully completed a certificate programme in SLQF level 1 qualification in the relevant field of study

Or

c. Successfully completed NVQ level 3 qualification in relevant field

Or

d. An equivalent or a higher qualification acceptable to the Senate of the Open University of Sri Lanka.
