Applied Geology

This is the 3 credits, Level 5 optional course offered by the Department of Physics. You will
gain knowledge of the history of the geology of Sri Lanka, an understanding of basic concepts
of geological field mapping in hard rock terranes, knowledge of the water and mineral
resources of Sri Lanka and gemology and value addition of minerals. The course offered to
you as 3 Units with 23 Sessions.
Unit 1 – Geology of Sri Lanka, Water and Mineral Resources of Sri Lanka
Geology of Sri Lanka, its historical records, formation, and overview of the recent updates and
study of water and mineral resources.
Unit 2 – Gemology and Value Addition of Minerals
The study of gems, gem identification using physical and optical properties, and value addition
of gems and minerals.
Unit 3 – Practical Guide
Introduction map reading with geomorphological features, exercises on geological map reading
, and basic geological mapping in the laboratory as well as in the field. Identification of gems
using physical and optical properties and heat treatment of gems.
