Department of Chemistry

I am, Chandani Ranasinghe (nee Liyanage), a senior lecturer attached to the Department of Chemistry. I earned my PhD from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura in 2011 for the work done on ‘Analysis and standardization of an Ayurvedic medicinal oil (‘Pinda oil’) and the measurement of partition coefficients of some of its constituents under the supervision of Prof. A.M. Abeysekera and Prof. G.M.K.B. Gunaherath. I received my MPhil degree in 2002 from the University of Peradeniya for the research work carried out at the Medical Research Institute, Colombo 8, under the supervision of Dr. L.B. de Silva and Dr. W.H.M.W. Herath. I did my B.Sc. (special) degree in Chemistry at the University of Peradeniya offering botany as the subsidiary subject.

I joined the Open University of Sri Lanka as an Educational Assistant in 1993 and was promoted to the posts of senior educational assistant, lecturer and senior lecturer. As a lecturer I have been involved in teaching organic chemistry covering the areas stereochemistry, reaction mechanisms, spectroscopy, aromatic and heterocyclic compounds, synthetic organic chemistry and designing and conducting organic chemistry practical sessions.

As the programme coordinator of diploma in Food Science and conduct lectures on organic chemistry, spices and essential oils, food additives and contaminants and novel applications in food industry.
