B.Sc. Special Degree in Botany – University of Kelaniya; M.Phil. Plant Sciences – University of Peradeniya; Ph.D. (Environmental Science and Conservation) – North Dakota State University; Post Doctoral Fellow – Purdue University; F. I. Biol. (SL)

Senior Lecturer (Grade II)

Dept. of Botany

I am enthusiastic and passionate about learning new techniques and research methodologies, which I can integrate to my research and teaching endeavors. I graduated from University of Kelaniya, Sri Lanka following a B.Sc. Special Degree in Botany in 2000. Then I served as a Temporary Demonstrator at the Department of Botany, University of Kelaniya for one year. I worked as a Technical Assistant at the IUCN for a short period and then I obtained an M.Phil. degree at the Postgraduate Institute of Science, University of Peradeniya in 2005. I served as a Research/Project Officer at the IFS Popham Arboretum from 2005 to 2007. I conducted several research projects on forest silvicultural management and forest regeneration at the IFS Popham Arboretum and conducted many school/university education programs. During that time, I served as a Visiting Lecturer at the department of Biology, Rajarata university. Then I joined the Open University of Sri Lanka in 2007 as Temporary Demonstrator and get promoted as Temporary Lecturer and the Senior Lecturer in 2010. I completed my Ph.D. in Environmental Science and Conservation at the North Dakota State University in 2013. Then I did my postdoctoral study on Geospatial Science at Purdue University. I served as a Lecturer at the department of Environmental Science, department of Forestry, Fire, and Rangeland Management, and department of Biology at Cal Poly Humboldt, USA from 2015 to 2021. Currently, I am serving as a co-faculty at the Environment & Community Program at Cal Poly Humboldt supporting and mentoring graduate student’s research. I conduct multidisciplinary research in two broad topics: (i) Modeling species distribution patterns of native/invasive species using remote sensing data such as hyperspectral data, Lidar data and unmanned aerial vehicle imagery data (ii) understanding multi-scaled land-use/cover dynamics and urbanization trends on regional and national scale. In addition, I conduct research on forest silviculture, carbon sequestration, ecology, and ethnobotany. My teaching philosophy is ‘active hybrid’ approach with rudiments with active content learning and service learning. I believe learning concepts through real life situations are useful to enhance learner’s interest in the subjects that I teach.
