A waste trap has been specifically engineered to capture litter that is transported downstream in the Kirulapana main canal, originating from the mid-canal section passing through the university premises. This innovative system not only captures the accumulated litter but also facilitates its centralized collection from a single designated point. Importantly, the implementation of this device does not present any risk to the local aquatic species inhabiting the canal. Consequently, it has played a pivotal role in the prevention of a significant volume of litter from entering and potentially polluting the marine environment.
Further to clean this mid-canal, the Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD) of the Open University of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with various environmental societies and municipal councils, has undertaken comprehensive and extensive projects. These initiatives reflect our collective commitment to preserving and enhancing environmental integrity. Through concerted efforts and cooperation, we aim to make a positive impact on our surroundings, reinforcing our dedication to sustainable environmental practices and the betterment of our community.
