Waste Collection Programme
The Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD) of the Open University of Sri Lanka has initiated a Waste Collection Programme as part of the ‘Less Plastic Movement’ campaign. Designated waste collection points have been established at various locations across the campus, allowing staff and students to responsibly dispose of various types of waste generated within departments, divisions, centers, and even from their homes. This programme comprises a series of awareness sessions aimed at highlighting the significance of adopting environmentally responsible waste disposal practices. Participants will learn about key sustainability principles, including the 3Rs (Reduce, Reuse, Recycle), as well as additional waste management concepts.
The initiative, held from 3rd to 21st October 2024, focused on the collection of electronic waste, plastic waste (including PET and low-density polyethylene), paper, glass, and metals. All collected waste was responsibly handedover to Cleantech Pvt. Ltd., a licensed recycling company accredited by the Central Environmental Authority. Cleantech ensures that the waste is recycled in an environmentally responsible manner, supporting the university’s sustainability efforts.
