Zero Emission Vehicles (ZEV) Policy on Campus
Most of University sites are cyclist and pedestrian friendly. There is a 20 km/h speed limit on all internal roads. Further, University has introduced bicycle lanes and three bicycle parks in front of the main gates. Therefore, the university community can access any place by using bicycles free of charge.
The University has offered around 30 bicycles to the pool of bicycle parks for easily getting access to places.
Use of Traditional Cart to Collect and Transport Waste
Adopting a sustainable approach to campus maintenance, the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) has seamlessly integrated the utilization of traditional carts for the collecting of green waste and other waste within the campus premises. These carts, traditionally propelled by the manual efforts of the cleaning service staff, represent an environmentally responsible alternative to the use of mechanized vehicles. By opting for these time-honored methods, the university actively diminishes its carbon footprint, thereby advancing the cause of environmental conservation and nurturing a more eco-conscious environment.
These carts serve not only as efficient means of transporting plant materials such as trimmings, leaves, and compost, but they also serve to preserve the aesthetics of the campus by minimizing the disruptions brought about by the operation of noisy machinery. Beyond their environmental virtues, the incorporation of these traditional carts into the daily operations of OUSL adds an extra layer of charm to the campus, enhancing the overall ambiance. This initiative underscores the university’s unwavering dedication to sustainable practices and cultural preservation, reflecting its commitment to fostering a more environmentally responsible and aesthetically pleasing campus environment.
Implementation of BUS Services for the University Staff and Students
The Open University of Sri Lanka, in collaboration with the Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB), has successfully introduced a bus service catering to the transportation needs of both the university’s staff and students. These buses operate along strategically selected routes, which take into consideration the geographic distribution of the staff and students, thereby efficiently covering a significant area. Some buses operate from the university to the main bus stands and railway stations. Thereby students/staff can seamlessly transition from the convenience of university bus services to public transportation. The fare charged for utilizing these services is notably economical, making it a compelling choice for a substantial portion of the university’s community.
The implementation of these buses has led to a substantial reduction in the usage of private vehicles among the staff, consequently resulting in a marked decrease in greenhouse gas emissions. These buses operate twice a day, with a morning arrival at the university at 8:00 AM from their respective starting locations and an evening departure at 4:00 PM. This well-organized service has not only facilitated the transportation needs of both students and staff but has also significantly contributed to a more sustainable environment by reducing carbon footprints.
