About the University
The Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) was established in 1980, offering the same legal and academic status as all other national universities in Sri Lanka. As the only recognized university in Sri Lanka where one can pursue further education solely by distance education methods, OUSL embraces the philosophy of Open and Distance Learning (ODL).
With over 45,000 students spread throughout the island, and many of our students are employed, showcasing our flexibility and accessibility.
Our Study System
At OUSL, we adopt a multimedia instructional approach with a strong emphasis on Distance Education methods. Our system includes:
- Printed material
- Online learning facilities
- Audio-visual aids
- Face-to-face discussions (Day-Schools)
- Laboratory work and fieldwork

Student Commitment
Studying at OUSL requires dedication and self-motivation. We provide the means for you to achieve your highest academic and professional goals, but the hard work is up to you.
For a typical 38-credit course load, students should be prepared to devote about 1900 hours of free time for self-study during the academic year - approximately 58 hours per week for 33 weeks.
