I graduated from the University of Colombo with First Class (Hons) in B.Sc Special degree in Chemistry. I received my Ph.D from the University of Birmingham, United Kingdom in 1987. I started my academic career as an Assistant Lecturer in 1982 at the Eastern University, Sri Lanka and later joined the Open University of Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer in 1996. In January 2013 I was promoted to Professor in Chemistry. I served as the Head of the Department of Chemistry, Eastern University, Sri Lanka (1987- 1990) and Open University of Sri Lanka (1995- 1998). In October 2012 I was elected the Dean of the Faculty of Natural Sciences. I was awarded a Commonwealth Scholarship in 1983 to do my Ph.D at the University of Birmingham, Commonwealth Academic Staff Fellowship at University of Bristol in 1995 and Imperial College London in 2012, Association of Commonwealth Universities (ACU) Titular Fellowship at Oxford University in 2005. I have taught Inorganic Chemistry, Radiochemistry, Environmental Chemistry and Industrial Chemistry at undergraduate level at the Open University. I have developed instructional materials for a number of courses. I have been involved in research into water quality, phytoremediation of heavy metals by aquatic plants and biosorption of heavy metals and textile dyes by plant biomass.
