Factory visit of Con Fab Steel (Private) Limited in Veyangoda
The academic staff of the Department of Civil Engineering recently visited the reinforcement steel production factory of Con Fab Steel (Private) Limited at Veyangoda as a part of enhancing interactions with the industry, with the invitation of Mr. Gaurav Goyal, CEO of the company. Con Fab Steel team explained and demonstrated the state-of-the-art TMT bar production technology used in the factory.
Additionally, the Structural engineering and Construction materials team of the department has initiated a collaborative research project with Con Fab Steel (Private) Limited to explore the effective utilization of waste products from steel reinforcement manufacturing to produce concrete products.

Inauguration of CAD Laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering
Newly constructed Computer Aided Design (CAD) Laboratory of the Department of Civil Engineering was ceremonially opened by Prof. P.M.C. Tillakaratne, Vice Chancellor of The Open University of Sri Lanka with the invitation of Eng. D. I. Fernando, Head of the Department – Civil Engineering on 02nd August 2024 at Block 2 building of the University. Dr. L.S.K. Udugama, Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Technology and all senior academics, academic supporting staff, nonacademic staff and the students of the department participated in the event.
The new CAD Laboratory is set to enhance the knowledge and skills in computer-aided modeling, simulation, and design, as well as AI applications in civil engineering. It will serve both undergraduate and postgraduate students, equipping them with essential tools for their future careers in the industry.
During the event, few students showcased their computer aided modelling/simulation work performed under their respective research projects to the Vice chancellor and other invitees.

Receiving of journal/magazines related to structural engineering
Mr. Shiran Ranga Perera, who is a practicing structural engineer at Texas, USA generously donated journals/magazines related to structural engineering published in USA to the department with the coordination of Mr. Vindana Geekiyanage, who is also a practicing engineer in Sri Lanka.
These journals/magazines were handed over to Eng. D.I. Fernando, Head of the Department of Civil Engineering by Dr. A.M.L.N. Gunathilaka on behalf of Mr. Perera.

ELIGIBILITY
The selection of students to the Masters Degree Programme will be made by the Department of Civil Engineering, in accordance with the following extended eligibility requirements approved by the Senate. A person seeking admission to the ‘Master of Science in Structural Engineering’ programme shall be required to have obtained,
1.1 A four-year degree of Bachelor of Science of Engineering in Civil Engineering from a recognized university or Bachelor of Technology (Engineering) in Civil Engineering from The Open University of Sri Lanka.
AND
1.2 At least the Associate Membership of a recognized professional Engineering Institute in a relevant field with a minimum of one (01) year period of appropriate experience, as approved by the Senate.
