The academic staff of the Department of Civil Engineering recently conducted a site visit to “The Residencies – Kohuwala” project, developed by the International Construction Consortium (Pvt) Ltd (ICC). Organized as part of the department’s ongoing initiative to strengthen industry-academia collaborations, the visit aimed to expose faculty members to cutting-edge advancements in modern construction.

State-of-the-art Prefabricated Prefinished Volumetric Construction (PPVC) technique is utilized for this construction.  During the visit, the staff gained firsthand insights into PPVC technique used for multi-story Construction. Experiencing these high-tech methodologies sequentially enhances the practical knowledge of the academics of the department, directly enriching the classroom knowledge transfer to engineering students.

The Department extends its sincere gratitude to the management of ICC for facilitating this invaluable experience, with special thanks to Eng. E.A.B. Edirisooriya (Deputy General Manager – Designs) for his coordination and support.

The collaborative research proposal, titled “Waste to wealth approach by production of
polyhydroxyalkanoate from the treatment of lipid waste and exploring its use in various
applications,” was selected for funding through a rigorous joint evaluation process conducted by
the Ministry of Science and Technology, Government of India, and its Sri Lankan counterpart.
Out of 442 R&D proposals submitted, this project is one of only 16 selected.

The Sri Lankan research team is led by Principal Researcher Eng. (Dr.) A.M.L.N. Gunathilaka,
alongside Co-Researchers Eng. (Dr.) G.N. Paranavithana and Eng. (Prof.) P.A.K. Karunananda
from the Department of Civil Engineering. They are partnering with an Indian team led by Dr.
Amit Bafana at the National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI) in
Nagpur, Maharashtra, India.

Marking the official launch of the project, the commencement and tri-partite agreement signing
ceremony for the Indo–Sri Lanka Joint Research Programme was held on July 1st, 2026. The
event was attended by government representatives from both nations, Vice-Chancellors,
university academics, and distinguished researchers.

Sakuni was on the verge of completing her degree, with a promising future ahead of her. Her untimely passing is a profound loss to the university community, leaving behind cherished memories and a void that can never be filled.

We extend our heartfelt condolences to her family, friends, and loved ones during this difficult time. May they find strength and courage to face this immense loss, and may her soul rest in peace.
