Digitally Empowered Medical Healthcare Prevention and Wellness Camp

The Digitally Empowered Medical Healthcare Prevention and Wellness Camp was successfully held on 11th May 2026 from 9:30 AM onwards at the Faculty of Health Sciences premises of The Open University of Sri Lanka. The initiative was organized by Health Web Society, Faculty of Health Science, in collaboration with Public Information Division, OUSL, whose collective support and coordination contributed greatly to the success of the event.

The medical camp was conducted with the objective of promoting preventive healthcare, early detection, wellness awareness, and digital health empowerment within the community. The initiative brought together healthcare professionals, medical partners, and members of the public in an engaging and impactful healthcare outreach program.
Kings Hospital in Colombo ,National Eye Hospital and Colombo Eye Surgeron joined the initiative as healthcare partners, providing professional screening and
consultation services. The camp offered a range of health screening services including BMI measurements, blood sugar testing, blood pressure monitoring, weight assessments, and eye screening services for participants.
A key highlight of the initiative was the integration of digital healthcare through the Medipille platform, which enabled participants to digitally store and access their health records securely. Participants were also introduced to the importance of maintaining digital health profiles for future healthcare accessibility and continuity.
The event further featured a prevention and wellness awareness session conducted with the support of U.S.-based healthcare expertise, Dr Deshan Nanayakkara focusing on the importance of preventive healthcare, lifestyle management, early identification of non-communicable diseases, and community wellness practices.
Throughout the program, participants received one-to-one consultations and guidance from healthcare professionals, particularly for individuals whose screening results indicated deviations from standard health parameters. The initiative created an interactive platform for health education, awareness, and personalized guidance while strengthening the importance of community-centered and technology-driven healthcare solutions.

The successful completion of the medical camp reflects the strong collaboration between academic institutions, healthcare providers, and digital health innovators in advancing accessible and preventive healthcare initiatives for the wider community.

Certificate Awarding Ceremony – Short Course in Pharmaceutical Promotion for Medical Delegates (Batch 01)

The Department of Pharmacy, The Faculty of Health Sciences, The Open University of Sri Lanka, successfully conducted the Certificate Awarding Ceremony for the Short Course in Pharmaceutical Promotion for Medical Delegates – Batch 01.

The event was graced by Professor B. Sunil S. De Silva, Dean of the Faculty of Health Sciences, along with the Head of the Department, academic staff, course coordinators, and participants.

This short course was designed to enhance the knowledge and professional competencies of medical delegates and aspiring professionals in the pharmaceutical field. Conducted over three months through a blended learning approach, the program combined online lectures with practical, on-site training, followed by a comprehensive assessment process.

The ceremony marked a significant milestone for the participants, recognizing their dedication and successful completion of the course. The Department of Pharmacy extends its sincere congratulations to all certificate recipients and wishes them success in their future professional endeavors.

“Sahana Malla” Programme

The Centre for Environmental Studies and Sustainable Development (CESSD) of the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) successfully organized the Sahana Malla Programme on 10th April 2026 as a welfare initiative dedicated to supporting the university’s cleaning service staff.

This programme was implemented with the objective of enhancing the well-being of the cleaning staff by providing them with essential grocery items for their daily needs.Through this initiative, carefully prepared grocery packs consisting of staple food items such as rice, sugar, lentils, and other necessities were distributed among the cleaning service personnel across the university.

The successful execution of the programme was made possible through the collective support and contributions of the OUSL community, including academic staff,administrative staff etc. Their commitment and generosity played a vital role in ensuring that the initiative reached all intended beneficiaries.CESSD expresses its sincere gratitude to all contributors for their valuable support. The programme not only provided material assistance but also served as a gesture of appreciation for the dedication and hard work of the cleaning service staff, whose efforts are essential in maintaining a clean, and green university environment.

National Research Symposium on Youth Development (NRSYD)

The Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports and the Open University of Sri Lanka (OUSL) have officially signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to co-host the 1st National Research Symposium on Youth Development (NRSYD). The signing ceremony, held on April 10, 2026, at the Senate House of OUSL, marks a significant step toward advancing youth-focused research and policy dialogue in Sri Lanka, on behalf of the ministry, Secretary to the Ministry Mr. H.M.U Aruna Bandara and on behalf of the University Vice Chancellor Senior Professor P.M.C Thilakarathna Signed.

The symposium, scheduled for September 16–17, 2026, at the National Water Supply and Drainage Board in Rathmalana, will be held under the theme “Young People as Right Holders and Change-Makers: Asset-based Pathways for Social Transformation.” This theme reflects Sri Lanka’s commitment to recognizing youth not just as beneficiaries of development, but as active agents of social transformation. The event will bring together scholars, policymakers, practitioners, and youth representatives to explore evolving challenges faced by young people, share evidence-based research and policy insights, and promote inclusive youth engagement in governance, peacebuilding, and development.

Featuring keynote addresses by distinguished national and international experts, plenary sessions, technical paper presentations, youth innovation showcases, and policy roundtables, the symposium will serve as a platform for collaboration and innovation. Selected research papers will be published in symposium proceedings and considered for peer-reviewed journals.

Expected outcomes include a national research compendium on youth development, strengthened frameworks for inclusive youth work, policy recommendations for national youth strategies, enhanced networks among youth-focused organizations and institutions, and greater recognition of youth-led innovation in driving social transformation.

The extended abstract submission deadline is May 4, 2026, with the symposium scheduled for September 16–17, 2026. This landmark initiative underscores Sri Lanka’s commitment to empowering its vibrant youth population as agents of sustainable national transformation.

IESL Recognition of the Degree Programme – Bachelor of the Science Honours in Engineering in Civil Engineering

IESL has granted Full Recognition under the new evaluation criteria, which came to effect from 2019 September, for the Bachelor of Science Honours in Engineering (Civil Engineering) degree programme conducted by the Department Of Civil Engineering, OUSL (This programme had Full Recognition of IESL under former criteria, until 2019 September).
