Capacity Building Workshop on Strengthening Quality Assurance Culture and Strategic Practices in the Faculty of Natural Sciences

The Faculty of Natural Sciences, The Open University of Sri Lanka, conducted a one-day outbound workshop titled “Strengthening Quality Assurance Culture and Strategic Practices in the Faculty of Natural Sciences through an Outbound Capacity-Building Programme” on 29 May 2026 at Waters Edge, Battaramulla. The programme brought together 27 academic staff members and five resource persons : Prof. Meena Senthilnanthanan (UGC-QAC Chairman), Prof. Gominda Ponnamperuma (QA Consultant, UGC-QAC), Dr. T. Sivakumar (QA Director, FoE – UoM), Dr. Jako Olivier (Higher Education Advisor, CoL, Canada) and Dr. H.M.C.J. Herath (Director, IQAU – OUSL) – to enhance quality assurance knowledge and practices within the Faculty.

The programme focused on strengthening quality assurance practices and fostering a sustainable quality culture within the faculty. A key outcome of the workshop was the development of a draft five-year Quality Assurance Roadmap (2026–2030) to guide strategic quality enhancement initiatives within the Faculty of Natural Sciences.

AI-powered Tools for Literature Synthesis – Session 3

The Faculty Quality Assurance Cell (FQAC) successfully conducted the third hands-on session of the series “AI-powered Tools for Literature Synthesis” on 26th November 2025.
The session, titled “AI-powered Tools for Literature Synthesis,” provided participants with practical experience in AI tools such as Semantic Scholar, Elicit, Consensus, Brisk.AI, NotebookLM, Napkin.AI and Gamma.AI.

Conducted by Ms. Shalini Rajasingham (Lecturer, CETMe), the workshop offered an interactive and insightful learning experience for 29 academic staff members.

Empowering FNSc Educators and Allied Staff Through Digital Tools – Session 2

The Faculty Quality Assurance Cell (FQAC) successfully conducted the second hands-on session of the series “Empowering FNSc Educators and Allied Staff Through Digital Tools” on 11th November 2025.
The session, titled “Creating Interactive Learning Content with H5P,” provided participants with practical experience in developing engaging and interactive learning materials using H5P and integrating them into Moodle. Participants also practiced the use of the Activity Completion tool in Moodle.
Conducted by Ms. Shalini Rajasingham (Lecturer, CETMe), the workshop offered an interactive and insightful learning experience for 22 academic staff members.

Empowering FNSc Educators and Allied Staff Through Digital Tools – Session 1

The FQAC successfully conducted the first hands-on session in the series “Empowering FNSc Educators and Allied Staff Through Digital Tools” on 29th October 2025. The session, titled “AI-powered Tools for Administrative Purposes,” introduced practical AI tools such as Zoom, Fireflies.ai, and ChatGPT for enhancing administrative efficiency and accuracy. Conducted by Ms. Shalini Rajasingham (Lecturer, CETMe), the session engaged 36 participants, 19 academic and 17 administrative staff members, in an interactive and insightful learning experience.

Awareness Session for Non-Academic Staff

The Faculty Quality Assurance (QA) Cell of the Faculty of Natural Sciences organized an awareness session for non-academic staff on Thursday, 28th August 2025, at the Faculty Seminar Room.
The session aimed to share the outcomes of the 2023 Program Review, outline the planned follow-up actions, and gather feedback on the ongoing program restructuring process. It also provided a valuable platform for participants to express their concerns and suggestions for further improvement of the BSc Degree Program.

The event was chaired by the Dean of the Faculty, with Dr. N. Nilkarawasam, former FQAC Coordinator, serving as the resource person. Non-academic staff members actively engaged in the discussions, demonstrating their commitment to enhancing the quality of academic programs and support services.
