Message from The Dean

Welcome to the Faculty of Health Sciences website which gives a glimpse into the Faculty programmes and the people.

The Faculty of Health Sciences joined the other four Faculties of the OUSL as its newest member, when the Department of Health Sciences attached to the Faculty of Natural Sciences was awarded the Faculty status with the approval of the University Grants Commission. Therefore, it is yet passing one of the historical and exciting periods of time with major improvements in human resources and infrastructure development.

Our Faculty aims to improve the health of individuals and populations through education, research and practice. Health and healthcare system improvements require trained professionals and in Sri Lanka the thirst for opportunities for career development in this sector is very apparent. This is why, in 1994 at the request of the Ministry of Health, the OUSL took the bold and innovative step to offer the first undergraduate degree programme in Nursing in Sri Lanka through Distance Education, opening up a new and exciting career development avenue for in-service nurses. With a continuing and expanding demand for higher educational opportunities from allied health professionals employed in our health sector, three other degree programmes are currently offered in Medical Laboratory Sciences, Pharmacy and Psychology. As all these programmes are delivered in the Distance Learning mode, students are able to study while working and having family and other commitments. We provide a student-centred learning experience where learning is facilitated mainly through printed course material, online support, practical and clinical exposure and limited face-to-face contact. As a Faculty, we now have plans to offer other programmes including postgraduate programmes.

You will find that the staff members in the Faculty are committed to sharing their expertise with the students. We are one of the largest educators of health and allied healthcare professionals in Sri Lanka, currently catering to approximately 4,000 students scattered throughout the island.

Look through our web pages to see the range of courses and programmes that one can study as part of a qualification or on a stand-alone basis, for professional development or for personal interest. Our programmes are designed for those who desire to obtain up-to-date knowledge & skills in health-related fields, whilst developing the required attitudes, values and professionalism essential to make an effective and efficient contribution to their chosen careers.

On behalf of the Faculty, I invite you to take advantage of the university-level prospects made available by us to reach your personal and career goals.
