I graduated from University of Colombo, Sri Lanka following a B.Sc. Special Degree in Botany. Then received my Ph.D. in Genetics and Plant Breeding from University of Western Australia, Australia, and completed post-doctoral studies (Sept. 2007 to Sept. 2009) at the same university.

I joined the Department of Botany at the Open University of Sri Lanka as a Lecturer (Probationary) in 1992 and promoted as a Senior Lecturer in 1999. (1999-2012). Then promoted to Professor in Botany in June, 2012 and appointed as the Professor of Botany (Chair) in February 2018. I served as the Head of the Department of Botany from March, 2011 to March, 2014.

Currently serving as the Editor-in-Chief of the OUSL Journal published by the Open University of Sri Lanka and as the Director/Research Unit of the Open University of Sri Lanka.

I received my Ph.D  (Molecular Biology) from Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi, India. I was awarded a Pre-doctoral Fellowship in 2004 by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB), Italy to do the Ph.D Programme in the area of CD80 Gene Expression at the Immunology Laboratory, ICGEB, New Delhi, India.   Also I received my M.Sc in Biochemistry, Molecular Biology and Gene Technology from University of Colombo in 1998.  I am currently attached to the Open University of Sri Lanka as a Senior Lecturer Gr.I.  I worked in Wayamba University of Sri Lanka nearly for 18 years (Jan 2001 – May 2018) where I served as the Head of the Department of Biotechnology for 6 years (Sep 2011- Sep 2017).   I started my academic career in the University of Jaffna in 1990 after my graduation and later in the Eastern University of Sri Lanka. I am interested in multidisciplinary research covering different fields Molecular Biology and Genetic Engineering, Nanotechnology, Wastewater Treatment and Drug Development for Cancer Treatment.  I received couple of awards including Presidential Award in 2002 and Government of India Scholarship Award in 2009.  I delivered few Keynote addresses both in National and International Forums and served in the panel of examiners for Ph.D thesis evaluation for the countries India and Australia.

After serving 12 years I joined Sri Lanka Instate of Advanced Technological Education. I served there as a Lecturer, Senior Lecturer and finally I worked as the director of the Advanced Technological Instate at Dehiwala. In 2011 I joined OUSL.
