Welcome to the Faculty of Natural Sciences

The Faculty of Natural Sciences has over 33 years of experience in delivering science degree programmes adopting the Open and Distance Learning (ODL) methodologies. The Faculty functions under the leadership of the Dean, who is the administrative and the academic head. It consists of six Departments: Botany, Chemistry, Computer Science, Mathematics, Physics and Zoology. In keeping with the mission and objectives of the Faculty, it currently offers 14 programmes of study ranging from Certificate to Postgraduate level, as well as stand-alone courses and short courses.

The programmes of study offered by the Faculty of Natural Sciences are designed to develop competency in the area of specialisation, the soft skills and the technology needed for the 21stCenturyworld of work.  Further, learners are given several opportunities to enhance their career paths and continuously instil a passion for lifelong learning.

The mission of the Faculty of Natural Sciences:

To be innovative in teaching-learning and research demonstrating leadership in Open Distance Learning (ODL) in science with a commitment to achieve national goals.

Objectives of the Faculty of Natural Sciences:

  • To develop motivated personnel successful in their academic, career & lifelong learning goals
  • To offer quality programmes informed by current needs and demands
  • To support the community and the nation through partnerships and public service
  • To promote research, scholarship and enterprise activities
  • To increase the outreach of the sciences via open access via distance education.

1.     Postponement of BSc, 1st Semester Final Examination, the academic year 2020/2021

The 1st Semester Final Examination of the BSc Degree programme, the Academic year 2020/2021, has been postponed. Starting date of the 1st Semester Final Examination will be notified later.  Please note that the students will be given 10 days of study leave before the commencement of the BSc, 1st Semester Final Examination, the academic year 2020/2021.

2.     Commencement of the academic activities – BSc, 2nd Semester, the academic year 2020/2021

The academic activities of the BSc, 2nd Semester, the academic year 2020/2021, will start from 07th October 2021. Please note that all the academic activities will be conducted online using the ZOOM platform. MTT will be circulated once it is finalized.

URGENT SPECIAL NOTICE

Further recommendations on COVID-19 health guidelines

Please adhere to the following guidelines when you are coming to the practical class;

1. Refrain from attending the practical classes if you have any suspected symptoms of COVID-19 which include fever, sore throat, body pains, headache, cough, diarrhea etc.
2. If the above symptoms developed in the practical class, please inform the staff member immediately.
3. Attendance to practical class without declaring these types of symptoms can be considered as an offense under Quarantine law.
4. Please bring the following PPEs with you when you attend the practical class. You will not be admitted to the practical class without them.

*  a visor/face shield,
*  2-pairs of gloves
*  KN95 mask

5.  All students must wear these PPEs throughout the practical class.
6.  Strictly maintain the requirement of maintaining at least 1.5 m physical distances in the practical classes.
